Who Owns Jeep?
The Jeep brand has changed hands several times during its journey from a World War II military vehicle to a rugged American off-roading staple. Let’s take a little tour of Jeep history and find out who exactly owns it now.
Today Jeep is owned by one of the world’s largest automakers–Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The Jeep brand has remained a division of FCA US LLC, a subsidiary of the Italian-American parent company, since it was purchased by the American Motor Corporation in 1987. While there were rumors of a possible purchase from a Chinese based company in 2017, those rumors proved false.
The first Jeep was created as a military vehicle in 1940 by Willys-Overland, and the Jeep name was officially trademarked in 1950. Once 1953 rolled around, Henry J. Kaiser purchased the company and rebranded it as Willys Motors Inc.and eventually switched the names to Kaiser Jeep Corporation in 1963. The company was once again purchased in 1970 by American Motors Corporation, the last owners before Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
